Tasmania FC has unveiled the name and design of its mascot to coincide with the first anniversary of the club’s branding, including its name and colours.
Created in collaboration with the Tasmania-based Terrapin Puppet Theatre, the mascot, named Rum’un, features a unique design that incorporates feedback from school children across the island. Impressively, Rum’un’s fur is crafted from recycled school uniforms, exemplifying a commitment to sustainability.
According to the Macquarie Dictionary, “rum’un” is a Tasmanian colloquial term describing an unusual or eccentric individual; it can refer to a scallywag or someone with a cheeky disposition.
To commemorate this milestone and the public unveiling of Rum’un, the club will host a celebration event on Tuesday night, inviting community members who contributed to the Devils’ first year as they gear up for their anticipated AFL debut in 2028.
In the upcoming weeks, Rum’un will embark on a tour of Tasmania, engaging with communities
across the island and proudly representing the Tasmania Football Club.
Commenting on their mascot reveal, Tasmania CEO, Brendon Gale, said: “Our newest recruit, Rum’un, will help us on our journey and be a great beacon of our club across the state.”
“The creation of Rum’un reflects our club – uniquely Tasmanian, handcrafted and created with grit and determination representing our whole island. Rum’un is also a little bit cheeky.
“These characteristics are all true to the Tasmania Football Club, a club that represents our whole state and who does things our way.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but with the support of our founding member base and the community more broadly we will continue to power ahead as we move toward entry into the national competition,” he said.
The mascot reveal also garnered attention on social media through a video on TikTok, with comments such as, “this feels like a Chris Lilley skit,” “where are the power rangers when you need them?” and “Raygun is that you?”
Despite comments online, Rum’un highlights a successful inaugural year for Tasmania FC, which has gained 207,000 founding members.
