Sydney FC has made one of the most significant acquisitions in A-League history by securing Brazilian star Douglas Costa on a two-year marquee deal. This move is poised to elevate both Sydney FC and the A-League’s profile on the global stage. Costa, who has played for European giants Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Shakhtar Donetsk, arrives with an impressive career resume that includes 24 trophies and 31 caps for Brazil.

Beyond the pitch, Costa’s influence is extensive. With over 13 million followers across his social media platforms and a fan base that includes Cristiano Ronaldo, Costa’s presence will provide Sydney FC with valuable global exposure. His reach surpasses that of some of Australia’s biggest sporting icons, including Pat Cummins, Nick Kyrgios, Sam Kerr, and Reece Walsh, with only David Warner and Daniel Ricciardo boasting a comparable online status.

Sydney FC chairman Scott Barlow emphasised the strategic importance of signing a player of Costa’s calibre. “He is one of the most high-profile footballers to ever play on these shores, and the eyes of the football world will be on Sydney FC and the A-League this season,” Barlow stated.

Throughout his 16-year career, Costa’s transfer fees have totalled close to AU$140 million, a testament to his high value on the global football market. His significant social media following opens new opportunities for Sydney FC in terms of brand partnerships, sponsorships, and international exposure, making this signing a pivotal move not just for the team but for the league’s marketing efforts. With Costa at the forefront, Sydney FC is positioned to capture the attention of football fans around the world, raising the A-League’s profile like never before.

Costa’s debut is expected on September 19 when Sydney FC takes on Hong Kong’s Eastern FC in the AFC Champions League.
