Super W Heads To Coffs Harbour Thanks To NSW Government Support

he fourth edition of the Super W National Women’s Rugby XV tournament will be held in Coffs Harbour from June 24 to July 3 thanks to the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s Regional Event’s Acceleration Fund.

The $20 million fund was set up to aid social and economic recovery and attract major events to regional areas.

Speaking on the announcement, deputy premier and minister for regional NSW, John Barilaro, said the fund was set up to attract events such as this to the bush and to help the events evolve, getting bigger and better.

“Hosting major events like the Super Rugby W tournament supports the visitor economy by putting more heads on beds and filling local restaurants, cafes and tourist attractions, all of which helps drive regional NSW’s economic recovery from drought, floods, bushfire and COVID-19,” Barilaro said.

According to Coffs Harbour City Council, Member for Coffs Harbour, Gurmesh Singh said the NSW Government had given funding support to Rugby Australia (RA) to bring the tournament to the region.

“These exciting Super W rugby fixtures in Coffs Harbour will showcase our local facilities, stunning natural coastline and attractions, and help to bring in much needed tourism dollars to Coffs Coast businesses and the community,” Singh said.

Coffs Harbour mayor councillor, Denise Knight, added “I’m particularly delighted for local players and the code’s fans who will be able to enjoy seeing the best in their sport on their own doorstep.”

“Coffs Harbour is a natural home for women in sport and events like this allow us to inspire women of all generations to be what they can see,” Knight said.

For those fans that are unable to attend the tournament live, Mirage News reports that all games will be available to stream on Stan Sport.

RA CEO, Andy Marinos, said both RA and the Rugby community thanked the NSW government for their ongoing support.

“The Super W Rugby competition is a major competition for female athletes to establish themselves at the national level before competing for higher honours,” Marinos said.

“It’s incredibly important for junior players to see their heroes and mentors compete in the flesh, to inspire the next generation,” he said.
