The opening game of the 2022 NRL State of Origin series saw nearly three million spectators tune in on Wednesday night.

The broadcast set a new record as the highest rated television program of the year so far, with a total of 2.937 million viewers for the match at Accor Stadium.

The game has also become the most streamed event of all time on the broadcaster video on demand (BVOD) service, 9Now.

The BVOD audience saw a 52% rise consisting of 425,000 viewers.

9Now director, Hamish Turner, commented: “It was fast paced, it was thrilling action, everything you could want from game one of Origin.”

“And it was an upset.

“It really sets it up for game two.

“We heralded a new commentary team, it’s a new era.

“We were thrilled with how they performed and the numbers are a true reflection of how people are consuming content these days,” Turner said.
