Sony has posted record annual revenue driven by PlayStation 5 sales and chip division

Sony has posted record annual revenue driven by PlayStation 5 sales and chip division, leaving Australian sports games to compete for engagement with international titles.

Sony has reported record operating revenue for the financial year, driven by strong sales of its PlayStation 5 (PS5) gaming console and its chip division. The Japanese electronics giant said it had sold 19.1 million PS5 units in the financial year, surpassing its own forecast of 18 million. This was up from the 11.5 million PS5 consoles sold in the previous financial year when Sony faced supply chain issues.

Sony’s gaming division was one of its biggest profit drivers for the year, bringing in operating profit of 250 billion yen, though that figure was down 27% YoY. This year, Sony is hoping to sell 25 million PS5 units, a new record. Notably, various popular games including FIFA 23, MLB The Show 22, NBA 2K23, Madden NFL 23, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, Olympics Games Tokyo, NHL, PGA Tour, Dirt, and UFC 4 all helped Sony deliver this result. The question is how Australian sports will compete for audience engagement with these international gaming options.
