Sony Acquires StatSports to Strengthen Global Sports Technology and Data Collection

Sony has expanded its footprint in sports technology through the acquisition of StatSports, a performance-tracking company known for its advanced wearable technology and global client base.

The move marks a strategic play in Sony’s growing sports data and analytics portfolio, reinforcing its ambition to be a dominant force in athlete performance and fan engagement technology.

Describing the deal as “a landmark moment” for the company, StatSports co-founder and chief executive, Alan Clarke, emphasised that Sony’s global reach and technical depth will accelerate their mission to advance athlete performance and injury prevention.

“Since our inception in 2008, our commitment has been to facilitate teams and athletes in achieving their utmost potential through advanced performance monitoring technology.”

“Together with Sony, we aim to set new benchmarks in performance analysis, athlete development, and fan interaction,” Clarke said.

Chief executive of Sony’s sports businesses, Rufus Hack, said the acquisition represents a major step in building the ultimate sports data and analytics engine.

“By integrating StatSports’ cutting-edge wearable technology with our established optical solutions, we are paving the way for new innovations in performance analysis, officiating, and fan engagement.”

“This positions us to offer a more holistic and valuable solution to our partners and the wider sports community,” Hack added.

Sony intends to integrate StatSports’ wearable and analytics technology with its existing suite of sports-focused businesses. This includes Hawk-Eye Innovations, known for officiating and broadcast tracking systems, KinaTrax, which specialises in biomechanical analysis, and Pulselive and Beyond Sports, which deliver immersive content and visualisation tools.

This acquisition strengthens Sony’s position across the sports data ecosystem, enabling deeper performance insights for teams while enhancing the quality of content for broadcasters and digital audiences. By merging wearable data with optical tracking, Sony can offer a unified platform that delivers end-to-end performance analytics — from training ground to television screen.

Founded in 2008, StatSports provides elite tracking systems that capture data points such as player movement, heart rate, and sprint speed.

Its technology is used by some of the world’s top sporting organisations, including Liverpool FC, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and the New Zealand All Blacks. The company also counts several high-profile investors among its backers, including England striker Harry Kane.
