Russia Withdrawn From Hosting 2023 Men’s World Championship

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) has withdrawn Russia from hosting the 2023 Men’s World Championship.

The tournament was scheduled to take place in St. Petersburg from May 5th to 10th, next year.

In an official release, the IIHF said the decision to relocate the event was taken primarily out of concern for the safety and well-being of all participating players, officials, media, and fans.

The release read: “As was the case with Council’s earlier decision to withdraw the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship that was to be held in Omsk and Novosibirsk, Russia, the Council expressed significant concerns over the safe freedom of movement of players and officials too, from, and within Russia.”

The announcement comes as another blow to The Russian Hockey Federation, which is already in the “midst of an indefinite ban from participating in international play” which was imposed by the IIHF shortly after the nation’s invasion of Ukraine back in February.

The new host for the 2023 men’s tournament will be decided during the council’s next meeting in Tampere, Finland, throughout the final week of the 2022 World Championship.
