Tennis Australia has announced a new era of grand slam entertainment with the launch of the inaugural AO Opening Ceremony, headlined by the emotional return of 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer.
The star-studded event, held at a sold-out Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, 17 January, marked Federer’s first official appearance at Melbourne Park since his 2020 semi-final run, as the organisation looks to blend elite sport with global festival culture.
The ceremony served as a commercial launch for the 2026 tournament, featuring a live performance by iconic Australian rock band Crowded House.
Federer told the crowd during an on-court interview.
“To be back here on this court, where I have so many incredible memories, is truly special.”
“The energy of Melbourne Park remains unmatched in the sporting world.”
In a rare assembly of tennis royalty, Roger Federer was joined on court by fellow former world No. 1s Andre Agassi, Ash Barty, Pat Rafter, and Lleyton Hewitt. The proceedings were hosted by Jim Courier, with 24-time major winner Novak Djokovic and the legendary Rod Laver watching from the stands as the tournament’s honour guests.
The program is a key pillar of the Australian Open’s move toward a 15-day “Sunday start” model, designed to maximise broadcast revenue and fan engagement during the opening weekend.
By creating a dedicated opening spectacle, Tennis Australia is emulating the “Super Bowl” style of entertainment delivery, ensuring the recognisable brand of the “Happy Slam” attracts audiences beyond traditional tennis enthusiasts.
The evening concluded with a glittering pyrotechnic display, signalling the official commencement of the 2026 Australian Open.
With record-breaking ticket sales already reported for the first week, the successful integration of the opening ceremony provides a strategic template for future Grand Slams seeking to elevate the commercial value of their opening sessions.
