The Canberra Raiders and Major Sponsor Huawei are looking to raise awareness and funds for Deaf Australia by sporting a specially designed jersey during the clubs round 23 match against the Manly Sea Eagles.

The player’s jerseys, which feature the Deaf Australia logo and the entire Auslan Alphabet, will be auctioned off via www.allbids.com.au  after the match with proceeds going to Deaf Australia.

“As major sponsors of the Canberra Raiders, Huawei is very proud to see this very special jersey launched today along with our very good friends at Deaf Australia,” Manager Corporate Relations and Programs of Huawei Australia, Lisa Connors said.

“For a child born deaf, the skills needed are many and don’t come in the traditional order of need. Lip reading, listening and speaking is a higher priority than reading.

“In addition to being able to raise funds, Huawei hopes to be able to put a spotlight on the issue of children’s literacy in Australia.”

“Both Huawei and Deaf Australia are delighted to have this opportunity to work with the Raiders and the NRL to help build a better community.”

Canberra Raiders CEO, Don Furner, said the Raiders were proud to work with Huawei on delivering another fantastic charity initiative and looked forward to the game later in the season.

“The Raiders and Huawei have a proud history of working together to help raise money and awareness for a number of very worthwhile causes and we’re looking forward to adding Deaf Australia to this,” Mr Furner said.

“Our club and players are all about putting back into the community and this gives us the opportunity to give some wonderful exposure for Deaf Australia who has been working with our Major Sponsor Huawei.”

Huawei and Deaf Australia have partnered previously on developing the globally recognized StorySign technology platform, a free mobile app that aims to help deaf children read by translating the text from selected books into sign language.

The StorySign app uses both AI and Augmented Reality technology developed by Huawei.

StorySign is available on Android smartphones can be downloaded for free from Google Play Store – to watch the film and learn how you can help, visit www.storysign.com
