The Premier Lacrosse League has reached a milestone, announcing the successful closure of a USD100 million (AUD144 million) Series E financing round. Led by Ares and Joe Tsai, this capital injection represents the largest investment in the sport’s professional history.
The round features a high-profile consortium of strategic partners, including a new minority equity investment from media giant ESPN, alongside prominent figures such as actor and producer Glen Powell, Wrexham A.F.C. co-chairman Rob McElhenney, and country music artist Warren Zeiders. As part of this transition, Jim Miller, Co-head of Ares Sports, Media and Entertainment, will join the league’s board of directors, while Glen Powell will take on the role of creative advisor to assist in expanding the sport’s presence in Texas.
Reflecting on the milestone, co-founder and CEO of the Premier Lacrosse League, Mike Rabil, noted the importance of this phase for the sport’s future.
“Lacrosse is entering one of the most important periods in its history.”
“With the Olympics on the horizon, we have an opportunity to introduce the sport to a new generation of fans and athletes around the world.
“Our focus is on building the infrastructure to support that growth through elite competition, broader distribution, youth participation, and a stronger professional ecosystem,” he stated.
Highlighting the league’s commercial potential, original investor in the organisation, Joe Tsai, added: “The PLL is one of the most exciting growth-stage scaling stories I’ve seen.”
“Mike and Paul have built a business with incredible trajectory, from accelerating media reach to a credible sponsorship platform to exponential fan engagement,” Tsai added.
The proceeds are earmarked for four primary strategic priorities: expanding media distribution and original storytelling, enhancing commercial and sponsorship partnerships, deepening investment in the Women’s Lacrosse League, and improving access to youth lacrosse. These initiatives are designed to build a robust professional ecosystem and expand the league’s fan base ahead of the sport’s anticipated return to the Olympic stage at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
