NSW To Allow Small NRL Crowds From This Weekend

The New South Wales government has granted the NRL permission to allow a small number of fans into venues for NRL fixtures in NSW, starting this coming weekend.

The move will see groups of up to 50 people be allowed into corporate boxes at NSW stadiums as of round five of the NRL competition.

The first game scheduled for round five is a Manly-Broncos matchup at Central Coast Stadium in Gosford, which is expected to be the first game to allow fans under the new social distancing measures, with Australian Rugby League Commission chairman, Peter V’landys, still hopeful club members will return to venues in July.

“We’re very please the (NSW) government have corrected the anomaly, because this was allowed in pubs, clubs and racecourses but not sports stadiums,” V’landys told AAP.

“It’s a good start and our next step once we’ve done that correctly is to try to convince government to allow us to have spectators in seated areas from July 1 or shortly afterwards,” he said.

V’landys reportedly said a similar bid for crowd return in Queensland and Victoria will be put to those respective governments if spectators can be successfully managed in NSW this coming weekend.

The move will see club sponsors likely return to matches, with only food and drink areas such as corporate suites allowing spectators.
