The ARLC has introduced a new policy to develop rugby league talent in Papua New Guinea (PNG) in preparation for a Port Moresby-based NRL team set to join in 2028.
NRL clubs can sign up to two PNG Pathway Players outside the salary cap, these players defined as those who have participated in junior rugby league in PNG will have their full salaries exempt from both the Top 30 and Supplementary Salary Caps.
The policy aims to invest in emerging talent from PNG by providing clearer pathways to the NRL.
Commenting on the policy, Peter V’landys AM, ARLC chairman, said: “The recent performance of the PNG schoolboys’ team, which drew 22-all with the strong Australian side, is a clear indicator of the talent emerging from the region.”
“These young players will gain invaluable experience through increased exposure to the NRL system,” V’landys said.
While the policy aims to improve pathways for NRL entry, its success depends on effective grassroots investment alongside the policy changes.
