A prestigious cohort of Indigenous sporting icons, led by South Sydney Rabbitohs recruit, David Fifita, and NRLW premiership winner, Olivia Kernick, has officially launched the 2026 Deadly Choices season.
Gathering at the Queensland State Parliament, the ambassadors joined NRL legend, Petero Civoniceva, to advocate for Australia’s leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander preventative health program.
Civoniceva emphasised the powerful role athletes play as community heroes.
“It’s about understanding the important part they play in being a Deadly Choices ambassador, inspiring community members to go out, make healthy choices and go out and get their 715 Health Check,” he said.
Surveys of over 800 participants in Queensland reveal that 94% credited Deadly Choices with influencing their decision to get a health check, while 84% felt more comfortable accessing health services because of the branding.
Furthermore, the program has motivated 64% of participants to quit smoking and 52% to cease vaping, showcasing its tangible influence on lifestyle modification.
Inspired by a similar clinic run by Sam Thaiday during his youth, Fifita now uses his platform to mentor the next generation.
“Deadly Choices has come a long way… hopefully the young people can follow our footsteps in the future,” the Torres Strait Islander star noted.
The core of the initiative revolves around the “Deadly Choices” shirts, highly coveted items that serve as a commercial incentive for community members to complete a 715 Health Check at their local Community Controlled Health Service (CCHS). This proactive medical screening is vital for the early identification of chronic conditions and illnesses within Indigenous communities, ensuring that “Mob” can get on the front foot regarding their long-term health.
