The NRL grand final is in doubt after a potential COVID-19 outbreak has threatened both the decider and city of Brisbane.

The NRL Grand final between the Penrith Panthers and Sydney South Rabbitohs is scheduled to kick-off at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane this Sunday.

However, after new cases have revealed a potential COVID-19 outbreak brewing in the city, the game has been put on high alert as the NRL considers a plan B.  

The news comes after Channel Nine’s, Jess Millward, posted a tweet on Tuesday stating that the NRL and Queensland are having “crisis talks”, where Townsville was now on notice as an option to host the deciding match. 

ARL commission leader, Peter V’landy’s, told the Courier Mail: “We are talking to the government,” 

“At this stage, it is not a concern but we will know more as the day unfolds.

“The grand final won’t stay at Suncorp if there is a lockdown, but at this stage, there isn’t one, so we have to hope and pray there isn’t a lockdown,” V’landy’s said.

The scare comes after two locally acquired cases were recorded in the city.

V’landy’s said: “There are two cases but they are husband and wife so hopefully it can be well contained.”

“We will see what happens later today – I don’t have too much information at this stage,” he concluded. 

Channel 9’s Danny Weidler later responded with a tweet stating that the NRL is not “not too concerned” and indications at this stage show that the match won’t be moved to Townsville. 

Although Danny did state that the next 48hrs is crucial.
