NFL to Host First Regular-Season Game in Ireland in 2025

The National Football League (NFL) has announced a landmark move in its international expansion strategy, confirming that Dublin’s Croke Park will host Ireland’s first-ever regular-season game in 2025. The Pittsburgh Steelers have been designated as the home team, further strengthening the league’s commercial and cultural ties with the region.

Commercial Growth in a Key International Market

The decision to stage a game in Ireland aligns with the NFL’s broader push into international markets. With an established European presence through games in London, Munich, and Frankfurt, this move opens new commercial opportunities, tapping into the strong Irish-American connection and the increasing demand for live NFL content outside the United States.

Peter O’Reilly, the NFL’s executive vice president of international, league events, and club business, stated that expanding into Ireland is part of the league’s long-term international strategy. The game will serve as a key test case for fan engagement, media rights growth, and sponsorship activation in a previously untapped market.

Strategic Selection of the Steelers

The Steelers’ selection is commercially significant. The Rooney family, which owns the team, has deep Irish roots, with Art Rooney II’s family history tracing back to County Down. The Steelers already have strong ties to Ireland, having played a preseason game at Croke Park in 1997. Their connection provides a compelling narrative for marketing and commercial partnerships, which the NFL will likely leverage to drive ticket sales, merchandise revenue, and brand engagement.

Economic and Tourism Benefits for Ireland

From Ireland’s perspective, the game is expected to deliver significant economic benefits. The country has a strong tourism sector, and major international sporting events have proven to generate substantial visitor spending. The Irish government has welcomed the announcement, highlighting the event’s potential to boost tourism, create business opportunities, and strengthen economic ties between Ireland and the U.S.

Patrick O’Donovan, Ireland’s Minister for Arts, Media, Communications, Culture, and Sport, noted that the NFL’s presence in Dublin represents a major commercial and cultural opportunity. The event is expected to attract corporate sponsorships, hospitality revenue, and increased global exposure for Ireland as a host for large-scale international sporting events.

Media Rights and Sponsorship Growth

The expansion into Ireland also presents fresh opportunities for media rights negotiations. The NFL’s international media deals continue to grow in value, and the Irish market could become an important piece of that puzzle. Global brands with interests in both the U.S. and Ireland may also look to capitalise on the event through sponsorships, activations, and local marketing campaigns.

While details on ticket sales and broadcast arrangements are yet to be confirmed, the game will be part of the NFL’s broader effort to deepen engagement with international audiences. It remains to be seen whether this will be a one-off event or the start of a longer-term commitment to hosting games in Ireland.

The official date and opponent for the Steelers’ Dublin game will be announced when the NFL releases its 2025 schedule later this year.
