The National Basketball Association and the International Basketball Federation have reaffirmed their intent to forge a unified professional men’s basketball ecosystem across Europe, despite facing immediate commercial pushback and reluctance from established continental clubs.
Following high-level discussions at a recent shareholder gathering on Lake Como, EuroLeague club owners elected to reject an initial collaborative proposal, deeming the financial and structural terms insufficient to serve as a baseline for negotiations.
Nevertheless, both global governing bodies released a joint public statement emphasising that a unified commercial framework remains vital for the long-term growth and commercial monetisation of the sport.
Official representatives stated in the joint release.
“A partnership between the EuroLeague, FIBA and the NBA to unify the European basketball ecosystem would unlock the game’s enormous potential across Europe for the benefit of clubs, players and, most importantly, fans.”
“The NBA and FIBA remain committed to moving forward with a new professional men’s league in Europe and helping build a stronger, more sustainable basketball ecosystem alongside partners who share our vision of growth, opportunity and the core principles of the European sports model,” they said.
Behind closed doors, tensions are escalating as the NBA and FIBA advance preparations for a competing 16-team competition widely designated as NBA Europe, targeting a commercial tipoff at the commencement of the 2027–28 season.
This operational blueprint proposes allocating four distinct positions directly to Basketball Champions League finalists and qualification tournament winners linked to domestic competitions across the continent.
Conversely, Euroleague Basketball is pursuing its own independent growth strategy, plotting a major expansion to a 24-team competition.
