Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) has made a strategic investment in The IX, a digital sports media platform with a dedicated focus on women’s sports, including The Next—its 24/7 newsroom covering women’s basketball.
The move underscores MSE’s ongoing commitment to supporting women’s professional sports and aligns with broader industry trends recognising the commercial potential of the women’s sports market.
Founded in 2020, The Next is the first daily media outlet solely dedicated to women’s basketball. The IX also publishes regular coverage across multiple sports including soccer, tennis, golf, hockey, and gymnastics.
Zach Leonsis, President of Media & New Enterprises at MSE, described women’s professional sports as “the growth stock in all professional sports,” signalling the organisation’s strategic positioning in an expanding market.
MSE founder and CEO Ted Leonsis also referenced his long-term involvement with the WNBA’s Washington Mystics and emphasised the importance of strengthening platforms that promote women’s sports and the legacy of Title IX.
The investment will enable The IX and The Next to expand their business operations, including the addition of two full-time business roles focused on commercial growth and operational support. Editor-in-Chief Howard Megdal noted that while the platform has built a strong audience across written, audio, and video content, resources on the business side have been limited.
Crucially, editorial independence will be maintained under the new arrangement, allowing the platforms to continue their journalistic coverage without interference.
The partnership reflects a growing focus on sustainable media models in women’s sports and the importance of resourcing independent journalism to support long-term visibility and commercial viability.
