Melbourne United has officially entered a new era following a landmark ownership restructure that values the club at a record $50 million.
The strategic shift sees a pair of Melbourne-based entrepreneurs, Travis Knipe and Aaron Sansoni, take full control of the National Basketball League powerhouse. This valuation represents the highest ever for an Australian-based basketball organisation, signalling significant commercial confidence in the league’s long-term trajectory.
Travis Knipe has emerged as the dominant force in the new hierarchy, increasing his stake to 75%. This is a substantial rise from the 30% share he initially acquired in March, driven by an active engagement with the club’s inner workings over the past several months. Knipe’s increased investment is underpinned by a commitment to provide the resources necessary for sustained growth and performance.
Commenting on the ownership restructure, entrepreuners, Knipe, said: “I very quickly realised that I had a real passion for the team.”
“I want to continue to build on the legacy that exists here and want to invest a lot more time and resources to help support the long term growth and success of the club”.
Knipe is partnered by Aaron Sansoni, who elevated his own share to 25% in September 2025. Sansoni, a private equity investor and entrepreneur who joined during the NBL24 season, intends to apply his global expertise to ensure the club remains one of the competition’s most attractive commercial assets.
The transition marks the departure of several key figures who laid the foundation for the club’s current status, including Brett Ralph, Kevin Li, Andrew Turner, and former board chairperson Larry Kestelman.
Melbourne United CEO Nick Truelson noted that the increased commitment from the new majority owners showcases the positive direction of the organisation.
The club is now pivoting its focus toward critical football operations ahead of the NBL27 season.
Immediate priorities include a global search for a new head coach and the finalisation of the playing roster as the new leadership team looks to translate this record financial valuation into on-court silverware.
