In 2027, the cricketing world will commemorate a significant milestone: the 150th anniversary of the first-ever Test match, held between Australia and England in Melbourne in 1877, with the historic occasion being celebrated with a day-night Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), which has been confirmed by Cricket Australia.
This highly anticipated match is noteworthy as it will represent the Australian men’s team’s inaugural day-night Test at the MCG, incorporating a modern twist to celebrate an event steeped in tradition.
Scheduled for March 11-15, 2027, the match is poised to be the latest men’s Test held in Australia during the home summer since the 1978-79 series against Pakistan.
Commenting on the event, Cricket Australia CEO, Todd Greenberg, said: “The 150th Anniversary Test at the MCG will be one of the great cricket events and playing under lights will be a fantastic way to celebrate both our game’s rich heritage and Test cricket’s modern evolution.”
“It will also help ensure more people are able to attend and watch what will be a fantastic occasion,” he said.
Cricket Australia has contractual rights allowing them to use the MCG until the end of March each year, despite the venue traditionally hosting AFL games during that month, however, the agreement was recently extended through to the 2030-31 summer, ensuring continued access for cricketing events.
The decision to host a day-night Test for such an important anniversary is strategic and aimed at bolstering spectator attendance outside of the school holiday period.
Moreover, this format aligns with broadcasters’ interests, offering an attractive proposition for UK TV audiences, whereas regular Ashes Tests on Australia’s east coast typically start just before midnight in the UK.
