Court disclosures filed in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey reveal that LIV Golf distributed over $15.6 million in executive retention bonuses during the eleven weeks leading up to its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing on 8 September 2026.
The documents, obtained by The Athletic, outline retention payments made between 24 June and 7 August 2026 to seven key corporate executives, led by a $6.375 million payout to Chief Executive Officer Scott O’Neil.
The financial disclosures further detail broader compensation and insider transfers totaling more than $12.8 million in additional bonuses over the 12-month period preceding the Chapter 11 petition.
Included within those pre-filing distributions was a $9.4 million settlement and bonus payment to former CEO Greg Norman in September 2025, alongside $4.5 million in performance bonuses issued to O’Neil between December 2025 and February 2026.
Public Investment Fund Exit and Balance Sheet Deficit
The bankruptcy proceedings follow the decision by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF)—LIV Golf’s primary financial backer since its launching in 2022—to terminate ongoing funding in April 2026. The capital withdrawal triggered severe liquidity constraints across the enterprise, resulting in the cancellation of the tour’s August 2026 Team Championship and widespread operational layoffs effective 1 September 2026.
According to initial court filings, LIV Golf’s financial footprint reflects substantial asset-liability imbalances:
- Estimated Assets: $100 million to $500 million
- Estimated Liabilities: $500 million to $1 billion
Restructuring Strategy and Roster Attrition
LIV Golf is pursuing a corporate reorganization backed by private equity firm BC Partners, which has proposed serving as the lead investor for a restructured “LIV 2.0” framework. However, the proposed financing package remains contingent on LIV securing long-term playing commitments from marquee players to establish a commercially viable league model.
The reorganisation effort faces mounting roster deflation following high-profile player departures:
-
Jon Rahm: Legal counsel formally confirmed during a September bankruptcy hearing that Rahm will not participate in the restructured tour format.
-
Additional Roster Exits: European marquee players Tyrrell Hatton, Tom McKibbin, Louis Oosthuizen, and Ian Poulter have officially announced their exits from the league platform.
In a formal communication outlining the proposed reorganization model, O’Neil detailed structural format revisions for the league, including expanding tournament field sizes from 57 to 75 players, introducing standard 36-hole cuts, and establishing Monday open qualification paths, while rebranding the Chapter 11 process as a strategic corporate restructuring.
