LIV Golf Adjusts Relegation Program for 2024 Season

As the 2023 LIV season continues to near its conclusion, professional golfers are gearing up for a number of significant changes in the LIV Golf League for the 2024 season.

According to executives from LIV Golf, the league has recently made adjustments to its relegation program which guarantee a spot in the 2024 season to the top 24 players on its seasonlong points list, plus team captains.

So, in the same way that we‘ve got jeopardy at the bottom end, where the bottom four get relegated, we wanted to make sure that there was the opportunity to control your own destiny at the top end,” said a LIV Golf executive familiar with the program.

“So, no matter how you got here, how you qualified or who you are, if you finished in the top 24 you‘re definitely coming back next year.”

The 14 team captains eligible for guaranteed spots in the 2024 season are Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Martin Kaymer, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Kevin Na, Joaquin Niemann, Louis Oosthuizen, Cameron Smith and Bubba Watson, as well as team captains from the Majesticks – Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson and Lee Westwood.

Furthermore, any players from 25th to 44th on the points list will enter what LIV Golf calls an “open zone,” where they can either move between teams or become free agents if not contracted to a team for the 2024 season. Meanwhile, all players from 45th and below on the points list will be relegated and will have to compete in a 72hole stroke play relegation tournament to be held in late November after the final 2023 LIV event.

LIV‘s executives believe the adjustments to the relegation program could lead to a significant percentage of this season‘s 48 players being gone in 2024, with an estimated 2025% turnover in fields. Winners of the promotion tournament, the Order of Merit from the International Series, as well as winners of fully sanctioned events on the DP World Tour or PGA Tour, players ranked within the top 200 of the Official World Golf Rankings, those ranked within the top 20 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings, members of the last edition of the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, and winners of the four major championships since 2018 will also be eligible for the promotion tournament to receive cards for the 2024 season.
