Katy Perry To Perform At Women’s T20 World Cup Final At The MCG

Pop superstar Katy Perry has been unveiled as the entertainment for next year’s Women’s T20 World Cup final at the MCG.

The final of the tournament, to be held on March 8 – International Women’s Day – is aiming to set a new world record for attendance at a women’s sporting fixture and Katy Perry might just help them achieve that feat.

The current record crowd of 90,185 was set at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Pasadena, California.

“I’m all about celebrating equality and the achievements of women, which naturally happens on a global scale on International Women’s Day,” Perry said.

“It’s no coincidence that I said yes to performing live at the women’s final on this day.

“I hope to bring a unifying, electric performance playing some of my most empowering songs for the best female cricketers on the planet and some of my greatest fans, as we all unite to support gender equality and empower people to achieve everything that they desire.”

Australia will be vying to win their fifth T20 World Cup title and their second on the trot after taking out the 2018 final in Antigua last November.

It’s the first time the event has been held on Australian soil, while the men’s tournament will be played later next year in October and November.

“We are seeing incredible momentum in the development of cricket as a sport for women and girls,” Local Organising Committee CEO, Nick Hockley, said.

“ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Australia is a perfectly timed opportunity to accelerate this change and take the game to new audiences.

“What better way to celebrate than the T20 World Cup final at the MCG on International Women’s Day and who better to lead that celebration than Katy Perry, who is an inspiration to girls and boys across the world.”

Before the women’s World Cup ends in blockbuster fashion at the MCG, the action will be spread across the country.

In just 100 days, Australia and India will open the tournament under lights at the Sydney Showgrounds Stadium on February 21.

Matches will also be played at the WACA Ground, Manuka Oval and Junction Oval, before the semi-finals at the SCG on March 5.
