In a landmark event for women’s professional sports, Kansas City unveiled the CPKC Stadium, the first of its kind globally, dedicated solely to a women’s sports team. The opening marks a historic moment for the Kansas City Current soccer team and women’s sports worldwide, signifying a significant shift towards recognising and celebrating female athletes’ achievements.
Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and the Kansas City Current celebrated this monumental achievement together, highlighting the power of collaboration and support in pushing the boundaries of women’s sports. CPKC President and CEO Keith Creel voiced his pride in this partnership, emphasising CPKC’s commitment to women’s professional sports and community investment. The inauguration of CPKC Stadium, according to Creel, is a testament to breaking barriers and forging new paths of success for women’s sports in Kansas City and beyond.
The Kansas City Current’s home game victory in the newly minted stadium was a fitting christening for the ground, symbolising the team’s promising future and the potential for women’s sports to captivate and inspire communities. Fans from diverse backgrounds, including international supporters, packed the stadium to its 11,500 capacity, showcasing the universal appeal and support for women’s soccer.
The partnership between CPKC and the Kansas City Current extends beyond the stadium’s naming rights. It encompasses a shared vision for the growth of women’s sports and a commitment to the community. The CPKC Plaza, a family-friendly area at the stadium’s entrance, and the Goals for Heart initiative, where CPKC will donate to the Adelaide C. Ward Women’s Heart Health Center for every goal scored by the Current, are prime examples of this synergy.
The collaboration is not just a win for the Kansas City Current but a significant step forward in promoting women’s sports on a larger stage. CPKC’s involvement, especially considering its significant presence in North America as a transnational railway, amplifies the message of women’s sports’ importance and the need for corporate support and investment.
The CPKC Stadium is more than just a venue for soccer; it’s a beacon for gender equality in sports, demonstrating the potential for women’s teams to have dedicated spaces that celebrate and honor their achievements. As the Kansas City Current embark on their inaugural season in this new home, the message is clear: women’s sports have arrived, deserving of recognition, support, and celebration.
