International Olympic Committee Approves Revised Timetable for Brisbane 2032 Olympic Sports Programme

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has approved a revised timetable to determine the official sports and discipline programme for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

Staged during an Executive Board meeting in Dakar ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the decision schedules the final programme confirmation for the 147th IOC Session in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, in April 2027.

Brisbane 2032 will serve as the inaugural Olympic Games to implement the IOC’s newly adopted ‘Fit for the Future’ sports programme methodology. The revised framework shifts away from evaluating sports exclusively as entire governing entities, establishing a discipline-based evaluation model designed to optimize operational efficiency, financial sustainability, and global audience appeal.

Regulatory Framework and Evaluation Process

Under the ‘Fit for the Future’ reforms, all candidate and incumbent disciplines are subject to a structured three-tier evaluation process managed by the IOC Executive Board and the Olympic Programme Working Group:

  • Initial Compliance Screening: Every discipline must pass strict mandatory benchmarks covering institutional governance, anti-doping compliance, financial integrity, and athlete safeguarding standards.
  • Core Criteria Assessment: Passing disciplines are evaluated against principal operational criteria, including global appeal, athlete gender representation, financial cost, and logistical venue complexity.
  • Cap Limits and Quotas: The framework maintains a hard athlete participation cap of 10,500 for the Summer Olympic Games. Consequently, the integration of new disciplines will necessitate corresponding quota reductions or discipline exclusions elsewhere across the Olympic programme.

December 2026 Shortlist Categorisation

Ahead of the final April 2027 vote, the IOC Executive Board will release an intermediate classification in December 2026, dividing existing and applicant disciplines into three distinct streams:

  • Automatic Recommendation: Incumbent disciplines slated for direct inclusion in the Brisbane 2032 Host Contract.
  • Combined Comparison Phase: Retained incumbent and high-priority candidate disciplines proceeding to comparative operational and venue feasibility reviews.
  • Eliminated Candidates: Applicant disciplines that fail initial compliance screening or core operational criteria.

Domestic Candidates and Host Options

Under the revised IOC framework, the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee retains the option to propose up to four host-specific additional disciplines, aligning with existing infrastructure in Queensland.

Several sports with strong domestic footprints in Australia, including surf lifesaving, netball, lawn bowls, cricket, rugby league, and Australian rules football, have actively engaged in preliminary discussions regarding potential candidate status, subject to venue availability and overall athlete quota limits.
