How AIS engineering is transforming recovery for Para athletes

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has partnered with its Engineering and Recovery Excellence in Sports Technology (REST) Hub teams to introduce an innovative solution tailored specifically for Para athletes.

This initiative has led to the creation of customised, Para-accessible ice baths and transfer aids, meticulously designed to meet the diverse needs of athletes with various impairments.

Commenting on the collaboration, AIS Sports engineer lead, Andy Richardson, said: “Historically, the commercially available inflatable baths have posed stability issues for Para athletes, especially during transfers from their mobility aids into the bath,” Richardson said.

In response to these challenges, the focus shifted to developing an ice bath with a robust sidewall along with specially designed transfer aids.

Adding a positive impression on his new recovery regimen, professional wheelchair basketball player, Phil Evans, said: “This is the first time I have felt comfortable and confident transferring into and out of the ice bath,”

“Having the independence to manage this process without relying on someone else has alleviated much of my anxiety surrounding it,” he said.

The combination aims to enhance the independence of athletes as they transition into and out of the bath, significantly improving their recovery experience.

The newly developed recovery equipment, which includes chilling units and ergonomically modified bath seating, is poised to facilitate effective cold-water immersion which is a crucial recovery method especially pertinent for the anticipated heat of the Paris summer during the Paralympic Games.

As these cutting-edge developments illustrate, the AIS remains committed to pushing the boundaries of athlete support, ensuring that Australian Para athletes are equipped with the best possible resources for optimal performance and recovery.
