Hockey Australia Restructures High-Performance Pathway With Strategic Coaching Appointments for Brisbane 2032

Hockey Australia has appointed former Kookaburra Simon Orchard and international coach Marcelle Keet as National Pathways Coaches.

The newly created roles form part of a comprehensive organisational restructure designed to bridge the gap between junior grassroots programs and the senior Kookaburras and Hockeyroos squads as the nation builds towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

The overhaul also features the elevation of Mark Knowles to Pathway Technical Director and Hugh Purvis to Talent Accelerator 2032 Technical Lead, reflecting a major workforce investment under Hockey Australia’s overarching Strategic Direction and Plan.

Operating within an integrated national framework targeting elite athletes aged 16 to 21, Orchard will spearhead the men’s Burras pathway program, while Keet will direct the women’s Jillaroos program.

Following a highly competitive recruitment process, these appointments ensure that junior athletes receive consistent, world-class mentoring.

Emphasising the strategic long-term vision of the high-performance restructure, Orchard, said: “My goal isn’t just to develop world-class junior athletes, it’s to develop future Kookaburras capable of winning Olympic gold on home soil in Brisbane 2032.”

“I will judge the success of the pathways program not by Junior World Cup results alone, but by how many players go on to become medal-winning Kookaburras,” Orchard noted. 

Bringing extensive global experience following her tenure as assistant coach for South Africa at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games alongside her work within the ACT high-performance system, Marcelle Keet highlighted the personal and athletic impact of her appointment.

“What attracted me most to this role was the opportunity to have a real impact on the next generation of Australian female hockey players.”

“I’ve always loved working in the pathway space because it’s where you can help shape not only better athletes, but better people,” Keet said.

The framework is equipped to deliver a seamless transition for elite juniors into senior international representation, reinforcing Hockey Australia’s commercial and operational readiness for the upcoming decade of home-soil global events and international fixtures.
