As the GWS GIANTS continue to grow their women’s program, the club has announced the inclusion of a team in the VFL Women’s competition in 2019.
As the VFLW’s 14th team, the GIANTS won’t play for premiership points, rather they will play as an ‘invitation team’.
The team, to be coached by GIANTS AFLW senior assistant coach Roger Moten, will play five games against Victorian clubs from May to July.
The GIANTS will play each of their games in Victoria, with their first match to be against Williamstown on Saturday, May 11.
GIANTS Chief Operating Officer, James Avery, said the new team provides a unique opportunity for the club and its players.
“Entering a team in the VFLW competition provides a great opportunity to continue to grow our AFLW program,” he said.
“It allows us to maintain parity with eight of the other AFLW clubs by ensuring our players can train and play together during the AFLW off-season.
“It also allows our players to remain in New South Wales and the ACT during the winter months as they continue their development.”
