Genius Sports Acquires Second Spectrum

Sports data and technology organisation, Genius Sports, have announced the acquisition of tracking provider, Second Spectrum, in a USD$200 million (AUD$255 million) deal.

The deal, which is set to finish in the second quarter of 2021, is a full acquisition of the data tracking specialist, and will be paid in cash and Genius stock.

Genius Sports chief executive, Mark Locke, said the acquisition supported their vision of “utilising AI tracking, enhanced data insights, and transformative technology.”

“Adding additional fan engagement technology to our already diverse and cutting-edge portfolio of products and services will create compelling, unique content, that will transform user experiences and create additional revenue streams for our customers,” Locke said.

Second Spectrum, who are based in Los Angeles, specialise in data collection and visualisation with official partnerships with the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Major League Soccer (MLS).

Genius Sports was founded in 2016 and specialise in data, technology, and commercial partnerships and work with over 500 sports organisations including the National Football League (NFL), the English Premier League (EPL) and more locally in the National Basketball League (NBL).

This will second acquisition within the week for Genius Sports after recently acquiring Australian company, FanHub.
