Gavin Larsen Returns as BLACKCAPS Selection Manager

Former New Zealand Test and ODI cricketer Gavin Larsen has been reappointed as BLACKCAPS selection manager, stepping into the role vacated by Sam Wells.

Larsen, who previously held the same position from 2015 to 2023, brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field.

He served as chief executive of Cricket Wellington and as cricket operations manager for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup before overseeing the BLACKCAPS’ selection process for nearly a decade.

Following his tenure, Larsen joined the Warwickshire County Cricket Club in England as performance director and later became commercial manager for the Nelson Giants basketball team.

Working closely with BLACKCAPS head coach, Rob Walter, Larsen will oversee selection for all BLACKCAPS, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI squads for both domestic and international tours.

Commenting on his appointment, Larsen, said: “I feel absolutely honoured to be stepping back into the BLACKCAPS and the national high-performance environment.”

“I’m hugely passionate about cricket in this country, and to be given another opportunity to contribute at the highest level is really exciting.

“I can’t wait to get started this summer and help play a part in continuing the success of the BLACKCAPS,” Larsen said.

NZC chief high performance officer, Daryl Gibson, said Larsen’s deep understanding of the domestic and international cricket landscape was key to his selection.

“Gavin’s familiarity with the role and his grasp of the modern game, particularly the balance between franchise and international cricket, stood out during the appointment process.”

“We were also impressed with his passion, energy, and desire to help shape the next generation of New Zealand cricketers,” Gibson added.

Gibson confirmed that the existing selection model will remain unchanged. The Selection Manager will provide insights, analysis, and recommendations, while the Head Coach will retain ultimate decision-making authority.

“While Rob Walter makes the final decisions as the chief selector, we want Gav to prepare him with as much intel as possible.”

“Their collaboration will be critical to ensuring consistent, informed, and competitive team selections,” Gibson concluded.

Larsen officially begins his role on November 3, ahead of New Zealand’s upcoming summer season.
