The FIA World and European Rallycross Championships are set to make a notable return in 2025, as the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) confirms it will take over operations of both series immediately, a move which follows an intensive three-month market testing period and signals a significant direct investment aimed at doubling motorsport participation.
In this new operational structure, the FIA will own and run the championships with the assistance of a service provider, aiming to enhance the sport’s visibility and engagement levels.
The schedules for the 2025 FIA World and European Rallycross Championships are presently being finalised, with an announcement expected by 14 March, pending approval from the World Motor Sport Council.
This initiative embodies a forward-thinking philosophy, designed to encourage growth for drivers, teams, and sponsors alike, while simultaneously enriching the fan experience.
The FIA’s commitment reflects a strong backing from FIA Member Clubs, which will be essential to the success of these championships.
Commenting on the investment in the championships, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, said: “The FIA is investing not only in Rallycross but in the future of our sport. We are determined to elevate this category by attracting new global audiences and enhancing competition for drivers, teams, commercial partners, and ultimately, fans.”
FIA Junior Road Sport Director, Emilia Abel, added: “The championship has huge potential to grow and develop at a global level and I am confident that this new opportunity for the FIA to operate the championship brings with it a bright future.
“The FIA will put fans and competitors at the heart of the work that is to come. All of us are looking forward to the 2025 season and being a part of this new era of Rallycross,” he said.
Recent trends reveal that over 30 million engaged viewers across more than 100 countries have tuned into each World and European Rallycross event, establishing a solid foundation for future growth.
A central aspect of the FIA’s strategy for the World and European Rallycross Championships involves prioritising free-to-air broadcasts and digital access, an approach that is crucial for attracting new fans and enhancing commercial opportunities for partners and sponsors by maximising audience engagement.
Moreover, Volvo Construction Equipment and Hoosier Racing Tire Europe have reaffirmed their commitment, continuing as the Official Track Building Partner and Official Tire Supplier.
The FIA also aims to build upon the successful “Battle of Technologies” concept introduced in 2024, which showcases the competition between internal combustion-engine cars and fully electric vehicles, highlighting the diverse spectrum of the automotive industry.
