Fenway Sports Group (FSG) is reportedly closing in on a transaction to sell a minority stake of approximately one-third in Premier League powerhouse Liverpool Football Club to an international investor consortium.
Valuing the historic club at an astronomical EURO4.4 billion (AUD7.3 billion), the prospective deal highlights the extraordinary commercial growth and valuation surges achieved during FSG’s sixteen-year ownership tenure.
The high-profile investor group features Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. According to widespread media reports, the consortium is being led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal and a former shareholder in English Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
Fenway Sports Group could formally announce the transaction as early as this week, marking a significant strategic evolution in the club’s corporate governance structure and global commercial footprint.
Addressing the growing market speculation last month, a Fenway Sports Group spokesperson confirmed the ongoing discussions, stating, “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
The capital injection arrives at a pivotal juncture for the Merseyside organisation both on and off the pitch. Following a disappointing fifth-place finish in the Premier League despite substantial player acquisition expenditures, the club parted ways with Dutch manager Arne Slot and appointed former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola.
In addition, talismanic forward Mohamed Salah has departed, while Michael Edwards, the chief architect behind Liverpool’s 2020 domestic title squad, stepped down from his role as chief executive officer of football at FSG in July.
Despite these operational transitions, Liverpool remains one of world football’s most valuable and commercially dominant assets, boasting a joint-record 20th English league title secured during the 2024-25 season alongside a storied trophy cabinet featuring six European Cups and ten League Cups.
With the team scheduled to open their new Premier League campaign away against Newcastle United on August 23, the incoming partnership is poised to provide substantial financial backing, ensuring the organisation maintains its competitive edge across domestic and international competitions for years to come.
