FC Barcelona Invests Heavily To Support Displaced Children And Refugees

A new partnership between UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, along with its National Association in Spain, ACNUR Comité Español, and FC Barcelona and the FC Barcelona Foundation will see at least €500,000 (AUD$730,000) invested over each of the next four football seasons to support displaced children.

The partnership plans to harness the power of sport to help millions of people around the world, including children and young adults, forced to flee their homes, through cash and in-kind donations such as sports equipment and technical expertise.

Reportedly, the cash contribution will be worth €400,000 each season toward projects across four continents, while the remaining €100,000 will be made up of a combination of FC Barcelona sports equipment and technical expertise of the FC Barcelona Foundation’s sports specialists.

The organisations will help refugees across four continents, increasing opportunities for refugees to participate in organised, developmental sport projects integrating protection and education, hoping to influence refugees to stay in formal education.

UNHCR director of external relations, Dominique Hyde, said the partnership will potentially be a lifeline for those forced to flee their homes due to war, violence, and persecution.

“Displaced children are in dire need of support to rebuild and reconnect,” Hyde said.

“Sport can play a vital role in helping them to improve their mental and physical well-being, develop skills to deal with stress and anxiety and connect to their communities.

“More than a pastime, sport has the power to restore normalcy to lives torn apart by war, conflict or persecution, and to help children and young people to heal and rebuild their lives,” she said.

The UNHCR/ACNUR logo will also be displayed on the back of FC Barcelona’s jerseys across the club’s range of sides, including the men’s and women’s first teams and the Barça Genuine Foundation team, over the next four seasons, in an effort to raise awareness of displaced people around the world.

The partnership is the latest collaboration between the FC Barcelona Foundation and the UNHCR, who have worked together since 2009 across various initiatives, previously supporting refugee settlements in Greece and Lebanon.
