Invictus Australia, in partnership with the Australian Defence Force, has launched the 2027 Adaptive Sports Program (ASP), calling for Expressions of Interest (EOI) from former serving veterans.
The announcement serves as the primary intake for Team Australia as they prepare for the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, scheduled to take place from 10–17 July 2027.
The Adaptive Sports Program is a structured, evidence-informed recovery pathway designed for current and former personnel who have become wounded, injured, or ill (WII) as a result of their service.
In addition, the organisation emphasises that selection is based on an individual’s recovery potential and personal readiness rather than elite sporting performance, ensuring the program remains an inclusive vehicle for long-term rehabilitation and social reintegration.
Commenting on the announcement, director of teams and events at Invictus Australia, Adam Pine, said: “International events such as the Invictus Games provide veterans with a reminder of what they are capable of.”
“Support continues long after the final event… it’s through these ongoing opportunities that individuals can continue their recovery, build meaningful relationships, and find renewed purpose,” Pine said.
A Unification of Recovery and Community
The 2027 program is backed by foundational research highlighting the “healing power of sport” in supporting veteran wellbeing and identity rediscover.
Participation is targeted at those who will benefit most from a team environment, focusing on attitude, commitment, and willingness to engage in sport for recovery.
Beyond the international competition, the organisation facilitates local sporting programs and volunteering opportunities to ensure veterans maintain social connections post-Games.
While Invictus Australia manages the former serving contingent, the Australian Defence Force will manage applications for current serving members via internal channels (DEFGRAM).
Key Dates and Application Process
The EOI period is the first stage in a multi-phase selection process that includes medical reviews and interviews.
The organisation’s commitment to the “Spirit of the Games” ensures that family and friends are also integrated into the journey, recognising the vital role of support networks in the transition to civilian life.
