Electronic Arts Shuts Down BioWare in Major Post-Buyout Restructuring Toward Live-Service Ecosystems

image

Publisher Electronic Arts (EA) has initiated a corporate realignment across its worldwide studio network, resulting in a global workforce reduction of approximately 3%, eliminating roughly 400 positions, and the total closure of role-playing game (RPG) developer BioWare.

The shuttering of the Edmonton headquarters ends a 30-year operational history for the studio behind franchises such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The organisational shift represents EA’s first major structural realignment following its $55 billion (~£42.3 billion) private equity buyout by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners in August 2026.

Detailed in an internal executive joint memo authored by president and chief studios officer Cam Weber, alongside president and chief operating officer David Tinson, the overhaul transitions publisher resources away from standalone single-player projects toward Games-as-a-Service (GaaS), competitive titles, and global sports interactive entertainment.

Portfolio Reallocation and Project Statuses

The realignment divides EA’s ongoing development pipeline across core live-service titles, licensed action properties, and social-first sports applications:

  • BioWare Closure & Single-Player Contraction: Early development on the unannounced next Mass Effect installment (informally referred to as Mass Effect 5) has been officially canceled. EA confirmed that while single-player action-adventure projects including Marvel’s Iron Man and the next entry in the Star Wars Jedi series remain in active production, resource allocation for unannounced narrative single-player titles will be reduced.

  • Shooter Franchises & Live Services: EA is increasing capital investment into Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale title Apex Legends to introduce new multiplayer modes and extended retention mechanics. Following the commercial trajectory of Battlefield 6, DICE and Respawn are collaborating on an unannounced live-service shooter project, reported by Variety as Star Wars: Battlefront 3.

  • EA SPORTS & Lifestyle Investments: EA SPORTS remains a primary commercial focal point. Alongside continuous live operations for EA SPORTS FC, the division is developing two unannounced projects: Project Gridiron, an open-world social platform for American football fans, and pre-production on a revived Fight Night simulation boxing title. Within the lifestyle segment, development focus shifts to Project Evergreen for The Sims, while the development headcount for Skate is being scaled back.

Executive Leadership & Strategic Priorities

In the joint communication, Weber and Tinson outlined three core operational mandates designed to guide EA’s capital deployment post-privatization:

  1. Core Franchise Deepening: Maximizing engagement metrics and recurring monetization across persistent live-service ecosystems.

  2. Geographic Market Expansion: Scaling direct-to-consumer and publishing operations across high-growth Asian markets.

  3. Sports Interactive Engagement: Transforming traditional sports gaming intellectual property into social, persistent interactive entertainment hubs.

The studio closure marks a significant structural shift in EA’s development strategy, signaling an aggressive pivot toward scalable, recurring revenue models under its private equity ownership structure.
