In an initiative by the Brisbane Broncos, over $200,000 has been raised for the Black Dog Institute through the Black Jersey campaign.
This effort marked a first in Australian sports as the Broncos put off black jerseys during a dedicated Mental Health Round match against the Gold Coast Titans.
The designed jerseys were created in partnership with the Black Dog Institute and apparel collaborator ASICS, symbolising a unified stance on mental health awareness.
Expressing pride in the campaign’s outcomes, Broncos CEO, Dave Donaghy, shared: “We were really proud of the results of this campaign.”
“The impact of the social media push was tremendous, reaching over 22 million individuals and generating 1.5 million engagements regarding the Black Jersey initiative as part of our Mental Health Round.
“Our goal was to ignite conversations about mental health, and with these exceptional figures, we seem to have accomplished that.
“We are delighted to make a contribution that supports their incredible work,” he noted.
Executive director and chief scientist at Black Dog Institute, professor Samuel Harvey, added: “This generous donation will facilitate new research into early intervention and suicide prevention, aiding us in developing practical tools and programs to assist Australians in need.”
“Partnering with the Broncos has provided a stellar opportunity to place mental health in the spotlight.
“We’ve heard from individuals nationwide who felt empowered to open up, seek assistance, or support loved ones due to this initiative.
“This kind of courageous leadership, authentic conversation, and science-backed action is precisely what we need to shift the mental health narrative. We are immensely grateful to the Broncos for standing alongside us,” he expressed.
In a display of solidarity, the Broncos’ major partners—Kia Australia, National Storage, ASICS, Firstmac, The Star Brisbane, Queens Wharf, and BCF, darkened their logos during the match, amplifying the message of support.
During the Broncos versus Sharks game at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday afternoon, Chairman Karl Morris presented a cheque for $200,841 to Colin Moore of Black Dog Institute at half-time.
