Brisbane Lions Strengthen Community Through Culture with Trip to Cherbourg

image

The Brisbane Lions, in partnership with their Principal Partner Youi, journeyed to Cherbourg, Queensland as part of their Guernsey Swap Program. This initiative seeks to move beyond mere symbolic gestures to cultivate a genuine understanding and foster enduring relationships with Aboriginal communities.

During their visit, players and staff from both the Brisbane Lions and Youi engaged in a profound cultural immersion experience at The Ration Shed Museum.

This session offered insightful education regarding the Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897, a policy that shaped and restricted nearly every facet of life for Aboriginal people in Queensland for decades.

Through narratives shared by local Elders, participants gained valuable perspectives on themes of dispossession, resilience, and cultural survival, prompting moments of reflection and fostering respect.

This experience showcases the Brisbane Lions’ commitment to truth-telling and reconciliation, emphasising the importance of walking alongside Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with humility and purpose.

In addition to the cultural engagement, the Lions, supported by AFL Queensland, hosted AFL skills clinics for local children and youth. These sessions were designed to facilitate skill development, mentorship, and connectivity, while promoting AFL as an enjoyable and inclusive sport. The enthusiasm was palpable as the day showcased a tapestry of smiles, energy, and talent.

As part of their legacy in Cherbourg, the Brisbane Lions and Youi took another step by installing AFL goalposts in the area. This symbolises the introduction of an alternative sporting pathway for local youth, expanding their opportunities to aspire to professional AFL careers.

The Brisbane Lions extend their gratitude to Youi, the Cherbourg community, The Ration Shed, and AFL Queensland for their collaboration, generosity, and unwavering commitment to promoting the sport and enriching the community through cultural engagement.
