The Brisbane Broncos have formalised an affiliate partnership with the Sunshine Coast Falcons for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, expanding their development network across South East Queensland.
The Falcons join existing Broncos affiliates, the Burleigh Bears, Wynnum-Manly Seagulls and Souths Logan Magpies, under a structure designed to strengthen pathways and grassroots programs, rather than direct player movement.
Unlike traditional feeder agreements, NRL squad members will not play for the Falcons, nor will Falcons players take part in pre-season train-and-trial arrangements with the Broncos.
The model is focused on talent identification and academy development, aligning with the club’s broader game development strategy.
Sharing how the partnership reflected the club’s long-term commitment to supporting rugby league at every level, Broncos General Manager of Recruitment and Pathways, Simon Scanlan, said: “The Sunshine Coast Falcons is not only a fantastic region but also one of the fastest-growing areas in the country.”
“Through this new Falcons affiliation, alongside our existing partnerships, we are dedicated to helping the game from grassroots right through to the professional ranks. We understand the responsibility we have in shaping the future of rugby league, and we’re proud to play our part to support it at all levels,” Scanlan said.
The move builds on the Broncos’ two-decade presence in the Sunshine Coast region, where they have invested in grassroots competitions and academy squads. The club first sponsored a local high school competition in 2003, which has since evolved into the Justin Hodges 9’s, involving more than 1,000 junior players.
The Broncos also maintain a partnership with the Falcons in the women’s game, which serves as a key affiliate for the club’s NRLW program.
The timing of the new agreement comes as the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) reviews the prospect of allowing NRL clubs to operate reserve grade sides from 2028. If adopted, this could reshape affiliation structures across the competition.
By securing Falcons alignment now, the Broncos are positioning themselves for sustained access to talent pathways and operational support across a key growth corridor, from Burleigh through to Noosa.
