Brisbane 2032 Opens Global Call for Architects

Brisbane 2032 and, more specifically, the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) has launched an international search for architects to design two landmark venues: the new Victoria Park Stadium and the National Aquatic Centre.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for Principal Architects opened on September 10, with submissions closing September 24. GIICA CEO Simon Crooks said the process would attract some of the most accomplished architectural firms from Australia and abroad.

Centrepieces for the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics

“Set within the stunning Victoria Park precinct, the new Stadium and Aquatic Centre will be the centrepieces of the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and Paralympics. We are seeking architects with proven experience delivering iconic projects to bring bold ideas and innovation to these future Brisbane landmarks,” Crooks said

The successful architects will partner with GIICA through the Early Contractor Involvement process, helping shape both venues to deliver long-term community and legacy value.

The Victoria Park Stadium will serve as the main arena of the Games, hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and athletics. It will hold 63,000 spectators in legacy mode, with a concert capacity of up to 70,000.

The National Aquatic Centre will host swimming, diving, artistic swimming, and water polo during the Games, before becoming the Australian headquarters for aquatic sports. It will feature 8,000 permanent seats, expandable to 25,000 for Olympic and Paralympic competition.

A Dream Opportunity for the World’s Best Designers

To qualify, applicants must be registered with the Board of Architects of Queensland and the Queensland Government’s Prequalification System (PQC). International architects are required to partner with local firms to meet the state’s certification standards.

Crooks described the projects as “dream opportunities” for the world’s best designers: “Designing an Olympic and Paralympic Stadium, which then becomes a city’s major events centrepiece, is a rare honour. This is a truly international moment, and we must cast our net wide to get the best design, complemented by cutting-edge innovation in sustainability, accessibility and visitor experience.”

“The Stadium and Aquatic Centre will not only shape unforgettable Olympic memories but also become enduring icons for Brisbane and Australia’s sporting future,” he said.
