he ‘big five’ European football leagues, England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, Germany’s Bundesliga, Italy’s Serie A, and France’s Ligue 1, have a total value of sponsorships in 2020 of more than $5.4 billion, according to KPMG Football Benchmark.

Out of the ‘big five’ leagues, the Premier League reigns supreme, pulling in almost double its nearest rival, La Liga annually in front-of-shirt and kit sponsorship income, recording a combined $1.36 billion per year, compared to $716 million per year for the Spanish top-flight competition.

The category of front-of-shirt and kit sponsorship brings in almost a third of the total revenue figure, with the Bundesliga providing $474 million, Serie A $407 million, and Ligue 1 $243 million.

The report says a large percentage of the revenue comes from a small number of elite clubs, with the ‘big six’ form the Premier League, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham Hotspur accounting for 83% of sponsorship value across the league.

In the La Liga, 80% of the sponsorship value is generated by just two powerhouse clubs, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, with Real Madrid pulling in $312 million alone.

The report showed a link between value of a club’s sponsorship value and their social media following, with Real Madrid also having the largest social media following, with 241 million followers across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube.

Second in both annual sponsorship value and social media followers was Real Madrid rivals, Barcelona, who brought in $262 million in sponsorship value, matched with 234 million followers across social media.

The rest of the club rankings saw Manchester United in third place with $257 million sponsorship value and 135 million social media followers, followed by Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Tottenham Hotspur rounding out the top ten with $131 million sponsorship value combined with 31 million social media followers.
