UniSport Australia, the peak governing body of university sport in Australia, has gained the support of Basketball Australia and its respective State Basketball Associations to create a new University Basketball League (UBL).

The 10-week tournament, which features both men’s and women’s teams, will be played across four regions from April to August 2020 and culminate in a finals weekend to determine our number one basketball university.

The UBL would also provide unique work-integrated learning opportunities that will enhance the students’ academic development with practical experience.

“It is with great pleasure that Basketball Australia endorses the University Basketball League,” Jerril Rechter, Chief Executive Officer Basketball Australia, said.

“Basketball Australia is excited about the UBL offering a significant pathway for our female and male athletes wishing to pursue both academic and athletic excellence here in Australia.

“Together with UniSport Australia, we look forward to seeing member Universities become a part of this exciting new league.”

UniSport will own all commercial rights to the League including the right to sell major and minor sponsorship deals with associated branding opportunities both at home and away games.

UniSport CEO, Mark Sinderberry, said: “Basketball is played by more university students than any other sport on campus in Australia, and this proposed league would provide a unique pathway for student-athletes with the innovative work-integrated learning opportunities that would directly complement their learning pathways as student-athletes.”

“This pathway would also recognise the significant role student engagement plays in wellbeing and positive learning outcomes.

“In addition, it provides a wonderful opportunity for universities to capture the pride and connection students past and present enjoy through their university careers.”

The UBL games are also expected to be live-streamed by the universities.
