The board of Basketball Australia (BA) has announced CEO, Jerril Rechter, has resigned and will depart the organisation on April 1.

Rechter was named BA CEO in February 2019 and was a key influence in the organisation winning the rights to host the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup and guiding the organisation through the COVID-19 pandemic.

The decision comes following the release of a racial equity review from the Australian Human Rights Commission which claimed BA has a “white boys’ club” mentality limiting opportunities for black players on and off-court.

It is believed the result of the review is not directly related to Rechter’s departure, as she reportedly ordered the review to take place as an effort of looking inward into Basketball Australia to support the delivery of racial equity in support of the Black Lives Matter social movement.

Announcing her decision to resign, Rechter said: “I am pleased to have had the opportunity to lead Basketball Australia and to achieve outcomes in the areas of diversity, growth, participation, and high performance.”

“I thank the many stakeholders in government, commercial partners, and the basketball community who have collaborated with the organisation and shared in the vision for the sport,” Rechter said.

Basketball Australia chair, Ned Coten, said the board of BA will appoint an interim CEO while they begin the search to fill the role permanently.

“Jerril leaves us with a strong overarching strategy, and having delivered a successful WNBL season, our first Diversity and Inclusion Framework, a Reconciliation Action Plan, and a high-level strategy for women and girls,” Coten said.

“The board sincerely thanks her for her contribution, and we wish her well in her future endeavours,” he said.
