Amazon Prime Video Announce New Indigenous AFL Documentary

Amazon Prime Video have announced the production of a new Australian documentary on three indigenous Australian Football League (AFL) players, titled “Warriors of the Field”.

The documentary will focus on current AFL players Michael Walters and Tarryn Thomas, as well as former AFL player Michael O’Louglin, and will be directed by professor Larissa Behrendt.

The one-hour documentary will be produced by the AFL, EQ Media, and Amazon Studios and will be exclusively available on Amazon Prime Video in 240 countries worldwide upon release.

The documentary will focus on the relationship between First Nations players and the AFL, as well as how they cope with the professional responsibilities of the sport and recount personal prejudices they have faced.

Amazon Prime Video Australia head of content, Tyler Bern, said the documentary will talk about the challenges players have faced to “help shape and change perceptions.”

“Amazon Prime Video members worldwide will be able to discover first-hand the three Indigenous AFL players extraordinary backgrounds, the challenges they endure day-to-day and their spiritual connection to culture and country that means so very much to each of them,” Bern said.

“Highlighting the important contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander footballers have made to Australia’s most loved sport is paramount,” he said.

Head of factual and executive producer at EQ Media, David Alrich, said: “Partnering with Amazon Prime Video enables a spotlight to be shone on these remarkable men and amplified around the world.”

“It enables the conversation around discrimination to evolve on a global level,” Alrich said.

The documentary comes off the success of recent Amazon original series, Making Their Mark, which premiered earlier this year and featured indigenous AFL player Eddie Betts.
