Airwallex Upgrades McLaren F1 Partnership to Become Official AI Finance Partner from 2027

image

Fintech unicorn Airwallex has announced a partnership with the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team, elevating its status to Official AI Finance Partner starting in January 2027.

Originally established as a technology partnership in 2024, the expanded alliance will deploy AI-native financial software and automated cross-border infrastructure across McLaren’s operational and commercial divisions.

Under the upgraded agreement, Airwallex will expand its physical branding footprint across the team’s kit sleeve, while retaining existing brand positioning on both Formula 1 race cars (Halo Rear Left location) and drivers’ race overalls.

Operationally, Airwallex will continue to power the backend payments architecture for McLaren’s digital partner merchandise platform, enabling multi-currency settlement and local payout capabilities across international markets.

Strategic Context and Capital Deployment

The partnership expansion follows Airwallex’s $320 million Series H funding round in June 2026, which valued the fintech firm at $11 billion. The fresh capital is directly driving the deployment of its autonomous finance software stack, including its $T:0$ AI-native enterprise platform and Airi, an agentic consumer wallet designed for delegated corporate payments, spending compliance, and real-time multi-currency treasury management.

Noting the team’s focus on leveraging autonomous software to streamline backend administration, chief financial officer at McLaren Racing, Laura Bowden, said: “Partnering closely with Airwallex demonstrates our long-term commitment to investing in faster, more efficient technology.”

“Airwallex is our first Official AI Finance Partner and we’re confident in their ability to help us run our financial operations faster and more efficiently,” Bowden said.

Emphasising the alignment between high-performance motorsport and AI-driven cross-border banking, chief financial officer at Airwallex, Pranav Sood, added: “Formula 1 is built on the pursuit of marginal gains, and that mindset has shaped our partnership with McLaren Racing.”

“Over the past three seasons, we’ve shown how smarter financial infrastructure and AI-native technology can help global organisations move faster and operate with greater control across borders.

“As we become an Official AI Finance Partner of the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team from 2027, we’re proud to support their business growth and deepen our relationship.

“This closely aligns with our broader strategy to help businesses move faster and more profitably than their competitors, and as we enter the Agentic Banking era, we’re focused on deploying intelligent AI capabilities across our unified stack with Agentic Business Accounts at the center,” Sood said.

Global Sports Sponsorship Footprint

The deal builds upon a commercial relationship that coincided with McLaren winning its 10th F1 Constructors’ World Championship and Lando Norris securing the 2025 Drivers’ Championship.
