The Sydney Cricket Ground and the nearby Allianz Stadium are set to become pivotal venues for the next generation of sports professionals, following the latest GIS announcement and aims to develop talent ahead of the anticipated surge in demand stemming from the lead-up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This partnership will allow students to pursue postgraduate programs at these iconic sporting venues as well as at the University of Newcastle’s campus in Sydney’s CBD, facilitated by a collaboration with Venues NSW.
“We are excited to be partnering with GIS to offer these Australian-first programs which will deliver experiences far beyond the traditional classroom setting.”
“To further mark the University of Newcastle’s 60th year delivering world class education, this unique collaboration offers our students unparalleled access to international experts, hands-on experience and world-renowned facilities to set them up for successful careers in the dynamic sports sector,” he said.
President and CEO of Global Institute of Sport, Sharona Friedman, added: “This partnership marks a significant milestone for GIS and reinforces our commitment to providing world-class sports education,”
“By combining our global expertise with the academic strength of the University of Newcastle and the unique access to elite venues provided by Venues NSW, we are creating a first-of-its-kind learning experience for Australian students as well as producing the next generation of leaders for the ever-growing Australian sports industry.”
The innovative ‘stadium-based’ campus learning model has already proven successful at GIS campuses located at Wembley Stadium in London and Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium in the USA.
Starting in January 2026, the new campus will offer two master’s degrees: a Master of International Sports Business and a Master of Sports Analytics, complemented by a Graduate Certificate in Sports AnalyticNotably, these programs will be the first in Australia to feature teaching conducted within the environment of stadiums, appealing to both domestic and international students.
The Master of International Sports Business will equip students with a profound grasp of the global sports landscape, encompassing vital areas such as sports marketing, sponsorship, sustainability, leadership, and athlete management.
Meanwhile, the Master of Sports Analytics and Graduate Certificate will concentrate on leveraging data analytics to enhance sporting performance, boost fan engagement, and inform business decisions, aligning with one of the industry’s most rapidly growing sectors.
Students based in Sydney will also benefit from learning opportunities at GIS’s premier sports facilities worldwide, which include not only Wembley Stadium and Chase Stadium but also the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, RSC Anderlecht’s Lotto Park in Brussels, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment’s BMO Field in Toronto, along with football academies located in Dubai and Jamaica.
This initiative, made possible by Venues NSW, promises to grant students direct insights into the workings of major sporting venues and events.
Commenting on the support Venues NSW is providing, GM – commercial at Venues NSW, Matt Hart, said: “Venues NSW is delighted to support this partnership and contribute to the development of future sports industry leaders, as well as the sector and the economy more broadly.”
“The Allianz Stadium and Sydney Cricket Ground are inspiration venues, and we are excited to provide students with the opportunity to learn in these world-class settings,” he said.
Additionally, they will gain access to a robust network of industry speakers, such as Socceroo and Liverpool icon Harry Kewell, former Wallabies captain James Horwill, alongside senior executives from Cricket Australia, Tennis Australia, various AFL clubs, and A-League teams.
