A joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico has successfully landed them the right to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

United, is the name allocated to the countires who successfully won the bid, with the World Cup now primed to be held in three nations for the first time in history.

The tournament will also return to North America for the first time in 32 years, with Carlos Cordeiro, president of U.S. Soccer and co-chair of the United Bid, stating: “Hosting the 2026 Fifa World Cup is a rare and important moment to demonstrate that we are all truly united through sport.”

He continued to say, United will offer Fifa and world football “unity, certainty, and opportunity” after the bid prevailed 134 votes to 65 in an election held during the Fifa Congress in Moscow, Russia.

“We are humbled by the trust our colleagues in the Fifa family have put in our bid; strengthened by the unity between our three countries and the Concacaf (Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) region; and excited by the opportunity we have to put football on a new and sustainable path for generations to come.”

Decio de Maria, president of the Mexico Football Federation and co-chair of the United Bid, said: “We are grateful for the chance to bring to life Fifa’s new vision for the future of football.”

“Together – in partnership with our candidate host cities, the member associations, and Fifa – we will use this platform to unite the world around football and help create a new and sustainable blueprint for the future of Fifa World Cups.”

Fifa president Gianni Infantino added: “To have a message coming from football that says, actually Mexico, Canada and the United States can organise the biggest sporting and social event together, it is a nice message.”

Fifa is yet to make the final selection of host cities for the 2026 competition from the 23 candidates proposed in the bid.
