The 2021 Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup between New York City FC and Portland Timbers was the most viewed soccer championship on ESPN and ABC since 2009.

The event hosted by Audi took place on 11 December with an average of 1.14 million views.

This was up 38% compared to the 2019 MLS cup between the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC.

NYCFC manager, Ronny Deila, said: “What we have accomplished together is amazing, unbelievable.”

This was the first MLS Cup played since 2019 due to COVID-19.

NYCFC sporting director, David Lee, said it’s all about working together.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go far, go together,” Lee said.

“We all, players, staff and most importantly you the fans, we went together to Yankee Stadium to beat Atlanta, together to New England, together to Philadelphia and most importantly together to Portland to bring the trophy home,” he said.
