ame three of the 2020 State of Origin had 2.7 million viewers, with the pre-match and post-match coverage reaching 757,000 and 769,000 metro viewers respectively.

With metro numbers alone, the game saw 1.8 million viewers tune in, with the national peak audience reaching 3.19 million viewers.

The audience was a substantial improvement from game one, which only saw 2.38 million viewers tune into Nine’s broadcast of the Origin opener.

Game one was the lowest metro audience since 2001, with 1.59 million metro viewers.

49,155 fans flocked into Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night for the game, making it the most attended sporting event in the world since the COVID-19 shutdown of sports.

Australian Rugby League Commission chairman, Peter V’landys recently said the series would return to its traditional slot in the middle of the NRL season next year, saying finances had a lot to do with scheduling the state of origin at the end of year compared to mid-year.

Crowd numbers also would have been minimal if the origin was to be played mid-season, due to COVID-19, with V’landys saying how important it was to get supporters and fans at the game.

V’landys said he wasn’t prepared to completely rule out the experiment of an end of the year Origin series, however would be having a close look at all the viewer ratings to see why the ratings were so low in game one.
