he host broadcast rights for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games have been secured by UK production company, Sunset+Vine.

The deal will see Sunset+Vine produce over 2,000 hours’ worth of Commonwealth Games content for the Commonwealth Games’ broadcast partners, set to reach an estimated global audience of 1.5 billion.

This agreement marks the fifth consecutive Commonwealth Games that Sunset+Vine have collaborated on, with an option in this contract to extend Sunset+Vine’s Commonwealth Games coverage to the 2026 and 2030 editions.

As part of the deal, Sunset+Vine will be responsible for designing, installing, and managing a new International Broadcast Centre for the 2022 Games, allowing media rights holders exclusive access to a mixture of live and delayed action for linear and digital platforms.

Birmingham 2022 CEO, Ian Reid, said Sunset+Vine will be a major influence in the success of the Commonwealth Games.

“Sunset+Vine is internationally renowned for delivering award winning coverage of the biggest sporting events in the world,” Reid said.

“Working with them guarantees that more coverage of Birmingham 2022 will be made available than any other Commonwealth Games, putting the West Midlands firmly on the global stage and delivering an unforgettable experience for fans,” he said.

Sunset+Vine chief executive, Jeff Foulser, said along with the contract, Sunset+Vine have committed to training 200 young people from the UK’s West Midlands region over a 12-month period, with 50% of participants to be recruited from minority and underrepresented backgrounds.

“This is such an exciting win for Sunset+Vine and we are delighted to have prevailed following a very rigorous bidding process,” Foulser said.

“The contract award further establishes the company as one of the few worldwide businesses with the creative and technical expertise to handle large scale events,” he said.

The deal was approved by the Commonwealth Games Federation Partnerships (CGFP) commercial vehicle, who will work with Sunset+Vine on commercial opportunities with partners for media, licensing, and merchandising.

CGFP CEO, David Leather, said the partnerships secures the broadcast quality for the next three Commonwealth Games, following the success of the partnership over the last two editions on the Gold Coast 2018 and Glasgow 2014.

“Securing the host broadcaster is an important milestone for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and we are delighted to be partnering with a world leading sports production company in Sunset+Vine,” Leather said.

“A key part of our strategy is to create long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships and we now have the arrangements in place to partner with Sunset+Vine and ensure a very high-quality broadcast for the next three Commonwealth Games,” he said.
