ed Bull adds in-house engine business Red Bull Powertrains Limited to its technology campus in Milton Keynes.

Honda have decided it will no longer manufacture power units for Formula One, but have reached an agreement with Red Bull Racing, allowing their use of Honda F1 power unit technology from the beginning of the 2022 season.

With teams unanimously deciding on a development freeze for power units from 2022, the Honda unit Red Bull have agreed upon, will see them through until the next generation of engine in 2025.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Red Bull Racing team principal, Christian Horner, said he’s excited at the opportunity the new engine division presents.

“We’re building a brand-new bespoke facility to house some of the best engineering talent in the business with a key a focus on the future regulations,” Horner said.

“It gives us the chance to fully integrate the powertrain into the chassis side of the business as well,” he said.

“So other than Ferrari, the only team in Formula One to have engine and chassis all produced, manufactured, designed under one roof effectively,” Horner said.

Sky Sports also reports that Red Bull have hired Ben Hodgkinson, head of engineering from rival team Mercedes, as the engine programs’ new technical director.

Horner said Hodgkinson was an obvious candidate given both his, and Mercedes’ success.

In a statement, Red Bull motorsport advisor, Dr Helmut Marko, said: “The establishment of Red Bull Powertrains Limited is a bold move by Red Bull but it’s one we have made after careful and detailed consideration.”

“We are aware of the huge commitment required, but we believe the creation of this new company is the most competitive option,” Marko said.
