Queensland Rugby Union Partners With Deadly Choices Ahead of Queensland Reds Indigenous Round

The Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) has announced a partnership with the Deadly Choices program, ahead of this year’s Queensland Reds Indigenous Round.

Deadly Choices, a prominent preventative health initiative from the Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, empowers Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make informed health choices.

Commenting on the partnership, QRU Indigenous Strategy manager, Dylan Blackman, said: “We are excited to partner with Deadly Choices as we prepare for the 14th Queensland Reds Indigenous Round.”

“This collaboration aligns perfectly with our commitment to promoting inclusivity, diversity, and respect within the game of rugby.

“Through this partnership, we aim to highlight the importance of health and wellbeing, particularly in Indigenous communities,” Blackman said.

Executive director of Deadly Choices, Dallas Leon, added: “We are excited to ignite this partnership with the Reds. ”

“Rugby Union allows us to reach another sporting community.

“The Reds stand out as the only team in the competition featuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players from their academy through to seniors.”

Through various culturally tailored programs, including school initiatives, sporting partnerships, community events, and health campaigns, Deadly Choices advocates for nutritious eating, regular physical activity, cessation of smoking and vaping, and engagement with Community Controlled Health Services for comprehensive 715 Health Checks.

Utilising sport and community role models, Deadly Choices has effectively inspired positive lifestyle changes.

Supported by numerous organisations and trusted community leaders, the initiative plays a vital role in addressing the health and life expectancy disparities faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.

This partnership seeks to honour and promote Indigenous culture within the rugby community while also focusing on enhancing community health.

A notable aspect of the partnership includes the launch of the Deadly Choices x Reds health check shirt, which will serve as motivation for community members to complete the critical 715 Health Check at their local Community Controlled Health Service, whilst also taking home a free exclusive shirt.

During the Indigenous Round celebrations, the Queensland Reds will don a special Indigenous jersey crafted by Madi Shuck, Queensland Red #222 and Wallaroo #184. Fans will be invited to engage in educational sessions, cultural performances, and community initiatives throughout the round.

These partnerships are essential for engaging young individuals and families by harnessing the influence of elite athletes and clubs that serve as ambassadors for healthy living.

By collaborating with national and state sporting bodies, including Rugby Union programs like the Queensland Reds, Deadly Choices effectively links health promotion with community pride, cultural identity, and sporting excellence.

Sporting partnerships are a crucial component of the Deadly Choices strategy, enhancing visibility and fostering trust within communities through respected role models who advocate for wellbeing and empowerment.

Together, these initiatives are making strides towards closing the health gap for Indigenous peoples through education, engagement, and a unified commitment to community health.
